For the online multiplayer component of Activision shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts, customization is king.

The video game publisher unveiled the first details on multiplayer features slated for the next Call of Duty at an even in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Ghosts' multiplayer mode will focus heavily on allowing players to customize their digital characters through the Create-A-Soldier feature. Not only will player choose weapon loadouts, perks and "killstreaks" as with previous titles, but they can alter their character's physical appearance, even choosing between a male or female soldier.

"This is the biggest overhaul of multiplayer since the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," says Mark Rubin, executive producer at studio Infinity Ward.

Players will be able to create up to 10 soldiers which can then compete in the new Squads mode. A player's squad will be challenged whether they're online or not, earning experience and other rewards for competing. Rubin says players can set defensive options for Squads to mange them if they're offline. The mode will feature solo, cooperative and competitive options.

Launching November 5 for current- and next-generation consoles, Ghosts will introduce a new Marksman Rifle class that will "bridge the gap between sniper and assault rifle," says Rubin, featuring firearms with flexible firing rates and sight options.

The game will inherit the "pick 10" system from 2012 game Call of Duty: Black Ops II, where players had 10 points to spend per loadout on any combination of weapons, gear and perks.

The perk system, which grants special battlefield abilities, uses points now. Each perk has a set point value between 1-5 points, with a total of 8 points allocated to each loadout. "So, you can take four perks each valued at 2 points, or eight perks each valued at 1," says Rubin.

Ghosts eliminates rewards for multiple deaths -- called Deathstreaks - and adds 20 more Killstreaks players earn for consecutive kills. Rubin says the rewards are more "ground-based" this time, with fewer aerial Killstreaks. For example, the UAV called in to track enemy movement is now based on the ground through a special device players can hide anywhere on the map.

Also available as a Killstreak reward, a guard dog. "He'll basically follow you around the map and kill off guys that get too close or kill guys that just kill you," says Rubin. "He'll also work as a UAV as he will growl when there are enemies near you."

Among some of the other changes coming to Call of Duty multiplayer: dynamic maps with traps triggered by players, a Cranked mode that beefs up reload, movement speed and other abilities with every kill, and a Call of Duty app for managing loadouts and bolstered support for Clans.

As with earlier versions, Ghosts will also include a Season Pass packaging four expansions for $49.99. The pass also lets players take the Xbox 360 version of the game to the Xbox One. No word on whether a similar plan is in the works for PlayStation.

Call of Duty's multiplayer mode has been a huge success for Activision. The franchise has netted more than 100 million players over its lifetime, and last year's Black Ops II raked in $1 billion in 15 days.

After several years of Call of Duty games, Rubin says finding fresh ideas for multiplayer mode isn't difficult, but the challenge is narrowing down the features that best fit the franchise. "During these last few years now, I feel like we've got that idea of what it is that's core to Call of Duty and how to make sure that stays sacred."
